Electrically tunable metasurfaces: from direct to indirect mechanisms

Abstract Intensive development of nanofabrication processes has opened a new window to control electromagnetic waves using subwavelength nanostructures array, named metasurfaces. Although the metasurfaces have succeeded in achieving unprecedented functionality by arranging various shapes modulate properties incident light, inherent passive characteristics make it impossible alter engraved functions after is fabricated. To give tunability metasurfaces, methods been proposed thermal, chemical, optical and physical stimulus. In particular, electrically tunable are attractive that they easy precisely could be integrated into electronic devices. this review, we categorize representative electrical tuning mechanisms research three; voltage-operated modulation, electrochemical-driven externally mediated modulation. Voltage-operated modulation uses materials directly reorganized an electric field, including liquid crystals Drude materials. Electrochemical-driven adjusts through electrochemical responses such as electrochromism electrodeposition. Lastly, causes change geometric parameters or phase constituent converting energy thermal mechanical stimulation. This paper concludes explaining pros cons each mechanism possibilities which electrically-responsive bring about.
